Hermas

MP3 Music Playlist:
The Shepherd of Hermas is an apocryphal writing from the early Church. While ultimately not included in the New Testament, it was often read by early Christians because of its powerful allegorical view of the Church as a woman helping the author through life.

Instrumentation: Voice, guitar, double bass
Duration: 2’

One day I saw someone I used to know.
She held all the things I tried to hide.
And, filled with shame,
I turned away

But she said “Don’t let the old sad and darkened days bring you down.
There’s still time, but you need to act soon to turn things around”

Then I saw a tower of perfect stones
but around its base – all the others,
broken and lost.
I saw myself.

And I thought “Don’t let the old sad and darkened days bring you down.
There’s still time, but you need to act soon to turn things around.”

And then I saw a beast rise from the dust.
Blood-red and fiery and harsh as life,
But I was saved
When my old friend

Smiled and said, “Don’t let the old sad and darkened days bring you down.
Now is the time – there’s no more waiting to turn things around.”
