- A Psalm of Lamentation and pleading for God's mercy and help
In this psalm of lamentation, the person cries out to God from his heart for mercy and help in his time of inner darkness and the desolation all around him. He asks God not to enter into judgment with him as he admits his sins and weakness. We can hear a Palestinian Christian in Gaza today, whose wife and children have been killed in bombings and has lost his home, village, and livelihood, cry out to God for mercy as he wanders hungry and in danger with his fellow refugees. This psalm could be a cry to God for help from a poor and pregnant young woman who has been rejected by her parents and recently by her boyfriend and others. As with all the lamentation psalms, this psalm helps us be in solidarity with and pray for people experiencing severe distress.
Ant. Let me know your mercy for in you I trust!
1 LORD, hear my prayer
in your faithfulness listen to my pleading;
Answer me in your righteousness
Enter not into judgment with your servant
For before you, no one can be just.
2 The enemy has pursued my soul;
He has crushed my life to the ground
He has made me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.
3 My spirit is faint within me; my heart dark
I remember the days of old;
I ponder all your deeds;
the works of your hands I recall.
4 1) I stretch out my hands toward you,
2) my soul pines for you you like a parched land
3) Hasten to answer me, LORD;
4) for my spirit fails me.
5) 1 Do not hide your face from me,
2 lest I become like those descending to the pit.
6)In the morning let me hear of your mercy,
for in you, I trust.
Show me the path I should walk,
for I entrust my life to you.
7) Rescue me, LORD, from my foes,
for I seek refuge in you.
8) Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
May your kind spirit guide me
on ground that is level.
9) 1 For your name’s sake, 2 LORD, give me life;
3 in your righteousness 4) lead my soul out of distress.
10) In your mercy stop my foes;
all those who are oppressing my soul,
for I am your servant.
