God's Gift to All the World (Nguyen, Schletty, van Haren)

MP3 Music Playlist:

Here is the result of a collaboration done in two days between me, Dan vi Nguyen (user asiansa09) and André van Haren. Dan's original post is here – you can see how the song progressed.

4/29/2017: A piano-guitar-voice score (PDF file) has been added to the end of this story. It is free for you to download. I am grateful to my colleague, composer André van Haren, for doing an engraving (music score) of his piano arrangement using Sibelius.

5/1/2017: I changed "I see blood" to "I saw blood." It sounded too much like "icy blood." I also decided to sing "I saw blood and water flowing" as a connected phrase. There was previously too much space in the middle of the phrase. This works out well to offset the vocal harmonies which now now provide counterpoint (polyphony). I also worked hard to thin out the mix in Apple Logic Pro. I had built up a wall of sound when I first added the piano track.

5/2/2017: I have replaced the 5-page score with a compact 2-page version (a PDF file currently available for free download).

5/2/2017: I have recorded a different version of the song more closely based on Dan's original lyrics. It is chant styled: topcatholicsongs.com/node/903#comment-9622

5/10/2017: If you earlier downloaded free the sheet music attached to this post, please note that a revised version was posted today. A word was missing from the lyrics. I also tweaked the timing of syllables on a few sung phrases.

5/14/2017: I recorded a video at St. Mary's last night and posted it below.

5/14/2017: One of the rules of songwriting is to write, rewrite, rewrite. This evening, I changed the first line of verse 4 from "Christ knows our grief, he knows our woes" to "For us he died. For us he rose." It seems to flow better and feel better in the context of that last verse.

God's Gift to All the World

The Father, Son and Spirit we embrace.

Share song with Providence

I shared the song music sheet "God's gift to all the world," to associate members and sisters/nuns at Providence, Oregon when I went to the meeting.  I also asked them to pray upon Christ and Our Lady of Providence to pray for our team who worked on the song.
I hope that is alright with you to share the song with others.

Share the song freely!

Yes, I encourage everyone to share the song freely – both the recording and the sheet music. They are not for sale anywhere and I do not have a publishing contract with anyone. My songs posted here fall under a Creative Commons public sharing agreement. In other words, share freely but always give credit to the writers/arranger (me, you and André).

Let me know how the community in Providence likes it. Do you live in Oregon? I appreciate their prayers. I wonder if we should submit the song to OCP – Oregon Catholic Press.

Oregon Catholic Press

I was going to ask you about it too.
I saw the website https://www.ocp.org/en-us/missals-and-hymnals-education
I have the same question as you ask too.  I was thinking about it a few days ago too.  But I never submit anything for publication yet.
Will you make a phone call to them asking about the license of how to submit new song for publication.

Submitting Song at Oregon Catholic Press

Is there any news about our submitting songs to Oregon Catholic Press.  Are they accept or denied our songs?

OCP song submissions

Sorry, I have not yet submitted our two songs. André van Haren did finish the piano music score for "Enchristment" last week. We needed this engraved score in order to submit the song. We already have what we need for "God's Gift to All the World."

I'll get back to you soon, Dan.

I will post the piano-guitar score for Enchristment later today. I need to add the guitar chords above the voice staff.

Song publication

I have never submitted songs for publication, however, do you think that the only way for people to accept songs for publication is when the song are become popular.  Do you have any experience submitting songs for publication before?  How does it work?

Catholic songwriters submitting to GIA, OCP and WLP

Some Catholic songwriters have achieved publishing deals with GIA, OCP and WLP. I would hope that there is always room for newcomers.

A very good songwriter and musician. Paul F. Page, has been largely ignored by the leading Catholic music publishers. See Paul's bio here: https://www.topcatholicsongs.com/paul-f-page-free-music

Paul's "solution" has been to give away his music for free. I am inclined to do the same.

I will endeavor to create here a professional service that will help songwriters prepare their music in a way that is just as good as what is being offered by GIA, OCP, WLP and others. I have the able assistance of a professional music engraver, André van Haren! www.andrevanharen.com
