We Want to See The World

David Burke writes: This song came to me in a special way, through God, of course, but I was thinking beforehand of all the things that are being said nowadays about the unborn having a voice. An unborn child is still a person and thus has a right to his or her life. We parents do not have the choice to change that. We used our choice when we enabled God to create this child, and that's where our options in that regard stopped and where our responsibilities began. So when I considered unborn children having a voice in their destiny, I envisioned these children speaking out in song and communicating with an angel about life on earth, as well as eternal life with our Almighty Creator.

A song between unborn children and their guardian angels.  To download the song, sheet music and words for free go to

My Voice by Elizabeth Schmeidler

Elizabeth Schmeidler writes... With the signing of the Freedom of Choice Act pending, (which will remove all limitations on abortions) I am sure your hearts have been as heavy-laden as my own. Just weeks ago I was inspired to write and compile the Pro-life video, "My Voice". I believe that this video may very well be the most important work that God has ever accomplished through me. Please take a few minutes of your time to watch it. I think that you will see where God's heart has led my own. All I ask of you is two things: that you pass this video on as far and wide as you possibly can, and to pray that the Holy Spirit prepares the hearts of those who are blinded to receive the message of life that the video proclaims. Our prayers and passion, along with this video, can make a difference in the hearts of the American people and I do believe that we CAN prevent FOCA from being signed, and more still, one day put an end to abortion. May God bless all of you and may He continue to have mercy on all those who have been affected by abortion. Thank you very much for your time and prayers!

Favorite Advent and Mary Songs

Nick Alexander here...

We are already into our second week of Advent, with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception before us, as well as the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And Christmas is merely weeks away.

Are you aware that TopCatholicSongs has a number of playlists already available to correspond to your Seasonal needs?

And, as is the benefits of these lists, you can immediately link to the iTunes page, where you can listen to the tracks first, and then purchase them--and instantly have them downloaded onto your computer. From there, you can listen freely, or you can upload them onto your own MP3 player, or burn them directly onto a CD.

If you like any particular song in the list, you are further free to explore that artist's full output, also on the iTunes page.

Or, you can click to any number of direct links on these lists, and have access to a Catholic or independent music retailer, where you can purchase the full CDs (perhaps as a gift?)

How do you have access to the Advent Lists? Or the Mary Lists? Or the Christmas lists?

Easy. On the bottom of each entry there are a number of Tags. Click on the tag that you would want to listen to (say, Advent), and immediately all the Advent pages will come up. It will be fun just sorting through them all.

In the meantime, do you have any favorite psalms/hymns/spiritual songs that are befitting for the season? Feel free to share them... leave a comment below!

SongStory: At the Hour of Our death

David Gawron writes:
This one lyric line (the favorite I've ever written) sums the song up:
"The broken shackles of humanity cannot compare at all to what lies ahead."

The song stems from the phrase in the rosary, which prompted me to think, "Hmm... what IS it like at the moment we die?" So the lyrics explore that theme, and all the potential emotions attached to that.

The verses were written rather easily, but I couldn't come up with a chorus, opposite of how I usually write. My housemate at the time (I was in graduate school at the Franciscan University of Steubenville), Jim Moran, had a little tune he'd wander around humming sometimes. He didn't have words for it or or verse ideas, but it was a great tune. It is now the At The Hour chorus, and it works fantastically as a complement to the verses.

The verses are very pensive and melancholy, as we say goodbye to the corporal life we've known. The chorus is supposed to be the angels greeting us as we pass into eternity with our Lord Jesus.

An artist created two watercolor paintings to illustrate the lyrics:

At the Hour of Our Death
Words and Music by David Gawron
Time stands still from where I lay
I feel my life slippin’ away
The Holy Spirit breathes into me, O Lord
My bruised and battered soul is set free
In communion with all the angels and saints
I feel the Raw and Pure Energy
I feel the overwhelming desire, O Lord
Your hands lift me higher and higher

It’s only now that I realize
I see eternity in Your eyes
I’ve never been, but I feel like I’ve been here before
And into Heaven my soul soars

I think of all I did with my life
All the blessings, all of the gifts
All the sorrow, and all of the pain
But I pressed on, my love never strayed
My prayers are answered, my debt is paid

The broken shackles of humanity
Cannot compare to what lies ahead -- And I heard the word He said

Christmas Albums 2008

Nick Alexander here... Christmas and Advent 2008 is upon us. This is a tremendous opportunity to wait in expectant hope for the coming of our Risen Savior, but also a time to reflect upon His first coming as a precious infant. These albums provide the best in both contemporary and traditional carols, both servicing Advent and Christmas. I invite you to check them out at your leisure, and introduce them to your family. Peace!

  1. Christmas Joy by Gretchen Harris
This Christmas album has a mix of classics and contemporaries, and an original, "Promised Messiah." (Try out: Joy to the World)
  2. Bethlehem Morn by Chuck Stevens
This project contains 9 original songs and 4 traditional Christmas songs. These songs range from reflective, meditative, folk, and contemporary; the title track, "Joseph (Bethlehem Morn) was included in the Spiritwing Records "Catholic Christmas" compilation in 2007. All of the original pieces, and the traditionals came about as a result of prayer and reading the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke, the book of the prophet Isaiah, and several are from the possible viewpoint of several of the participants in the Gospel infancy narratives. (Ex: Once in Royal David's City)
  3. In His Presence...the Gift of Christmas by Trish Foti Genco
Beautifully orchestrated Christmas Classics. Including contemporary, arias, and New Orleans Jazz. (Ex: What Child Is This)

Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day)

This Sunday marks the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, otherwise known as All Souls' Day. It is a day where we remember the dead. We remember those who have passed on to the next life, specifically those who are undergoing purgation for their sins.
Purgatory is an interesting doctrine, and there are those who believe that the Church does not teach this anymore. Not true. The Catechism of the Catholic Church has dedicated a section to this often understood doctrine. (CCC #1030-32). Indeed, there are many other excellent resources out there that explain what purgatory is.
This song list is a personal list of songs that I feel speak to this theme the strongest:

  1. Song of Farewell by Father David Hemann off of the album Holy Warriors
  2. Consuming Fire by Third Day off of the album Offerings: A Worship Album
  3. With the Lord There Is Mercy by Bob Hurd and Anawim off of the album A Lenten Journey
  4. Pie Jesu by Celtic Woman off of the album The Greatest Journey - Essential Collection
  5. With the Lord There Is Mercy by Paul Tate off of the album Bring Us Home: Celebrating God's Love and Mercy
  6. Jerusalem, My Happy Home by Saint Clement's Choir & Peter Richard Conte off of the album Hymns of Heaven and Earth
  7. With the Lord There Is Mercy by Angus McDonell off of the album River of Life
  8. Restless Is the Heart by Bernadette Farrell off of the album Restless Is the Heart
  9. With The Lord There Is Mercy by News At Eleven off of the album Here Till The End
  10. Savior of Souls by basic off of the album Another Road Trip

All Saints Day

Nick Alexander here... November 1st heralds the Feast of All Saints, according to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. It is a tremendous day where we all celebrate and honor the lives who have went before us, who had finished the race, and who are currently before the Great Throne of Heaven, praising God interceding for us. It is our opportunity to learn from them, learn their stories, discover new devotions, meditate upon their writings, and be inspired by their example. The song list here encompasses every single musical style: from classical, to hymns, to contemporary... there's even a great a cappella blues song in there. Three Songs from this long list are well worth highlighting. Litany of Saints as performed by Veronica Morrissey. No song selection is complete without a Litany of the Saints, where we ask individual Saints, by name, to pray for us (Rev 5:8). This particular version is one that she finds to be most prayerful. This rendition is off the album, Veronica Morrissey, Songs of Prayer.  The Grace Within as performed by Valerie Von Fange. Valerie writes:
This song is a tribute to the life of St. Augustine. Some of the lyrics are St. Augustine’s own thoughts from his book The Confessions of St. Augustine. The underlying groundwork for St. Augustine’s change of heart was his mother’s (St. Monica’s) perseverant prayers. Because he was a truth-seeker, he eventually found his answers in the Biblical writings of St. Paul and sermons of St. Ambrose. St. Augustine’s conversion story portrays sin just as it is- dirty, heavy, tainted with constant regrets, in a nutshell- painful! He is proof that a diehard sinner can become a saint by responding to God’s grace. That is why the Church has named him “Doctor of Grace”. This rendition is off the album,.Get Canonized a Saint as performed by Nick Alexander. This is a parody song of Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away." I wrote the lyrics to demonstrate that Sainthood is not something called for a select few, but is something to which we all are called to. No matter your state in life, what you have accomplished in the past, what mistakes you have made, we are all given the task to finish the race before us.(Phil 3:13-14). This rendition is off the album, Eternal Life: The Party Album
